Boulder Opal

Boulder Opal is opal which forms in cavities of ironstone, and is found in Queensland, Australia. The opal forms within cracks both horizontally and vertically in boulders. When cut, the ironstone is usually left on the back, which gives the cut gem a natural dark aspect. Because of the dark backing, the boulder opal absorbs more light than white and crystal varieties, and this means contrasting colours are more rich and vibrant.
